Definition: Twitter is a free microblogging service on the Internet that allows members to publish 140-character max updates, a.k.a. "Tweets," about themselves to keep their friends and followers in the loop at all times.

Twitter utilizes @ Mentions to start conversations with other Twitter users without the use of Direct Messaging (DM). @ Mentions are public unless user profiles are set to private.

Twitter can be great for online companies because it generates instant awareness every time a member "Tweets" about a company-related event.

eCommerce site owners can also enjoy perks from Twitter, which allows them to post on spontaneous sales, clearances, and new product information.
