Before making a product, one must think about his or her target market. Your target market is the only reason you are making money! Therefore it is important to know your target market and work for them. This is usually easier said than done. However, if you follow the steps below, the process will be a piece of cake!
Understand Your Target Market
The first step of the process is to understand your target market. This includes knowing their demographics and psychographics. Whoa, what does that even mean? Demographics are the general categories such as age, gender, location, marital status, ethnic background, etc. Psychographics, on the other hand, identify the consumers by their personal characteristics which include personalities, attitudes, values, lifestyles, interests and behaviors. Thinking about your product, what type of people do you want to satisfy?
Look at Your Current Customer Base
Now, it's evaluation time! Here are a few questions you are asking yourself for this step: "Are there enough people that fit this criterion?" "Will these people benefit from my product?" "Can these people afford my product?" "Will I be able to reach my message out to this target market?" With these questions you are tweaking your target market to be in stride with your product or service.
Check Out The Competition!
Now that you know that specific group of people you are looking to support, check out similar products to see who they are targeting. Of course, no one wants to be a copy cat, but in this case you are researching and learning from the competition's mistakes! Stick out to someone they are overlooking. See what the competition is doing wrong and improve upon it for your company. It is important that you do not go after the same market as your competitors.
Adjusting Your Product to Your Target Market
Since you will be tweaking your target market, you must be open to tweaking your product. For this step, it is easiest if you create a list. List the features of your product. Then, keeping your new target market in mind, provide a benefit to each of these features. If you notice a feature that does not provide a benefit, you improve it.
These steps are simple, but disregarded. It is important to keep your target market happy and let them know they are not going unnoticed by using and updating content distribution, which is your website, writing blogs and using social networks to notify everyone about the advancements you have made to your product! After all, they are the ones putting that money in your pocket!
