If you've googled yourself recently, then you've probably seen the creepy influx of personal information listed on sites like Spokeo.com. If you've never heard of it before, Spokeo is a website that searches the web for personal information about individuals which is then compiled and published on their website.

Is Spokeo a scam?

Although they claim that their mission is to "help people find and connect with others, more easily than ever", it seems like their goal is to allow you to peek into the private lives of others- which can only be done by paying them for the information they compile from "a large variety of public sources". Even more interesting is the original home page of Spokeo.com, which clearly displays the twisted ulterior motives behind the site:

Spokeo Reveals their true Intentions, Spokeo Scam

"Uncover personal photos, videos, and secrets...GUARANTEED. Want to see something juicy? Spokeo searches deeply within 47 major social networks to find truly mouth-watering news about friends and coworkers. Spokeo is designed to let you dig up information on friends, foes, and anyone in between."

In addition to listing your basic information (name, age, sex), Spokeo also lists personal info such as:

• Estimated Income
• Family members
• Credit Score
• Satellite Images of your home
• IP Address Records
• Ethnicity
• Social networking sites you are a part of
• Relationship status
• Hobbies
• Photos
• Videos
• And much more!

While researching Spokeo.com, I realized that most of the information provided through their website is highly inaccurate. My age, gender, income, home value, occupation, ethnicity, and address, among other things, were completely incorrect. So although Spokeo may not be a "scam" per say, I still would not trust- or pay- for their obtrusive and flawed data

How to Remove your Personal information from Spokeo.com?

1) In order to remove yourself from this untrustworthy site, you must first search for yourself.
2) Once you've located your listing on Spokeo, copy the URL and paste it into a document for so you can easily access this again.
3) Next, go back to Spokeo.com and search for yourself via email, username and phone number in order to find the multiple listing about you that people might be searching for. Copy and paste these URL's into your document.
4) Now that you have all the necessary URL information, go to the Spokeo Privacy Page.
5) Paste the URL (only do one at a time, this may take 3-4 times depending on how many different listings you found about yourself on Spokeo), Enter your email address, and type in the code that appears on the site.
6) Click Remove Listing
7) Check your email for a confirmation. Once you receive this, click the link at the bottom to complete the removal process.
8) Your listing will be removed from their website within one business day.

If you have issues with this process or get an error message, check out the info provided in the Spokeo FAQ.

What's your opinion of Spokeo? Helpful? Harmful? Do you think Spokeo is in fact a scam website full of inaccurate and misleading information or do you think it will help people connect with others, as their mission statement claims? Share your opinions below!

Spokeo definitely doesn't have completely accurate information. It's grabbing from the Internet in a unorganized manner. Pretty much I look at it this way, the WWW has provided multiple ways for us to keep in touch with our friends, family, post/share photos, stories, track what we like based on things we say. I'm as guilty as the rest - and I agree, it is invasive, but that's because we post everything about our lives - so we kind of need to accept some of the blame on ourselves for exploiting our lives. I've used Spokeo and it has given me bits and pieces of useful information. My dad is a PI, so if I really want good dirt, then I'll just ask him! Have a great Evening!

The first page when you type in someones name shows my boyfriend as being listed on dating sites. Do you think this part is at least true?

I've spent about 4 years working in the background check/people search niche, and can tell you that this story has been repeated about 100,000 times. Unfortunately, there is actually quite a good deal of accurate information available through various sites. I've had many folks write to me, quite literally in desperation, at not being able to clear their name from being associated with out-of-date or inaccurate records being offered for sale.

@umar you can just make up an email and delete it. I've done this to 16 individuals in my family and friends so they didn't have to go through the hassle. It's really easy. Either use your email address or make a free yahoo account and then follow the instructions. Only thing, you can't erase more than one person with the same email address on the same day. You must use separate emails or do them on separate days. I don't know how many times I have to come on here geesh...Here is the info:

Find your name page on Spokeo and in another tab open up: http://www.spokeo.com/privacy

Copy the url from your name page and fill out the form on the privacy page. It's free and easy way to delete yourself.

Spokeo is very much a scam with incorrect information. Would not recommend it...save your time and money.

I have an issue with an email address that I shut down. I was registered to webites with it. Now that I want to remove myself, it sends the confirmation link message to the email that I already got rid of. You cant enter a new or different email address.
So I cannot remove myself from Spokeo.

The crazy thing is that Spokeo is not the only website that lets literally anyone find your personal information, you still have all these guys to worry about:

ZabaSearch
US Search
Private Eye
Spoke
People Smart
People Finders
White Pages
Acxiom
Intelius
USA People Search
MyLife
Rapleaf
Radaris
People Lookup
Archives.com
Pipl
Public Records Now
Epsilon
BeenVerified

We created SafeShepherd.com because all of these sites had our personal information WITHOUT our permission, and they also all had a different policy on how to opt out. Even when you do opt out, your info can pop up again in a few months.

We decided to fight back and wrote software that automated the opt out process for all these sites and also scanned the web so that when we reappeared on the sites we would be removed again.

We have a free plan at SafeShepherd.com that removes you from Spokeo.com and a handful of other sites. Check it out and if you have any other questions ping me at noah@safeshepherd.com

I'm back 6 months later & I searched for my name again---couldn't be found. I think it's worth the time. It's free, so what is there to complain about? Just find your name page and in another tab open up: http://www.spokeo.com/privacy

Copy the url from your name page and fill out the form on the privacy page. If there are numerous pages with your name, you have to use different email addresses per one. Or if you want to use the same email address, come back every day and do one per day. It's free and easy. Worked for me even 6 months later, I'm not on there. Good luck!

By the way, create a fake email address. I don't think you want them to have your real email.

Spokeo has all of my info wrong too, and charged me $14.95 for a FREE trial just to see my info. When I asked them about the charge, they said no refunds even though I am not able to access the site anymore.

Their own 'Spokeo is a not a scam' webpage is now at the top of Google's search for 'spokeo scam.' I hope this pages edges them out, as they ARE a SCAM.

Scam? Not scam? Don't take their word for it, or from the commenters below. Search your own name. The info is incorrect and/or something anyone could find in a phonebook. But, most people have the wrong info about me. It's not a scam until they charge you $19.95 (or whatever) for it!

Spokeo somehow charged my PayPal account $14.95. I assume this is a subscription/user fee? I don't even know who they are. How did they access my PayPal account? I do remember clicking on, 6 months ago, a profile...that I thought was free....when looking at realestate. Never was a fee listed. And 6 months ago. Geez....

Scam Forsure

I discovered spokeo when searching for myself. It listed me and numerous others with the same name, 15. Only the locations and ages were correct, and in most cases they dated from more than 10 years ago. Anything else was complete BS.

I also checked on someone whom I knew, who is unique with that name in the USA. Spokeo delivered incorrect marital status, childen, and employment. Only the town of residence and age were correct. Now, that person is rarely mentioned in public records or the internet, so I was able to figure out what spokeo did. There were two others with the same name in her household (an older sister and herself with mis-spelled name), and those were assumed by spokeo to be husband and a child!

Spokeo was founded by Stanford univeristy grads. I have nothing but contempt for Stanford and its grads. Parasites, all. They got in by social contact rather than merit, I believe.

So my question is...if I sign up for Spokeo can I see what my cheating boyfriend is doing on the internet?

what gives you or anyone else the right to publish private info....I think legal actions should be taken....I'm PISSED!!!!

Posted on: June 20, 2011

That's the nature of the Internet unfortunately, Peggy.

Personally, I removed myself from the spokeo site- you can follow the steps above to do the same.

Sal- I found a lot of inaccurate data on the site as well!

Posted on: June 20, 2011

Peggy

Rania I tried removing myself with no luck...I'll keep trying as I want to be gone from this site....furthermore the info they have on me is incorrect.

Spokeo is a horrible and intrusive website. Yes, one can remove themselves and no longer are they gone, they are right back on, if you can even remove yourself. The security code to finish the removal process is made so that one cannot tell if letters are numbers and vise versa, no matter how sure you are about what you put it. Also, I signed up with FB with a fake email/name and FB sent a confimation to my personal laptop and real email address due to them collecting our url's. I work in IT and I can't see any way out of this madness.

I was able to remove my inaccurate information easily. And when I re-searched, I couldn't be found. So I guess, so far, it's worked out for me. I'll check back in a week and a month to see if I'm permanently removed.

I agree I also paid the small fee to find out what Spokeo was all about and my info had me listed as a 80yr old male and married. This site can cause problems if someone looked this info. up and believed the information that is listed on this site. I have cancelled my subscription and probably too late to remove info because I know longer have access to the info., but after reading how to remove your personal information even though it is inaccurate I will attempt again to do so.

Posted on: September 3, 2011

Rania

Thanks for sharing your thoughts everyone!

Peggy- Any luck with removing your info from spokeo yet? The instructions above should do the trick.

Crickett- You're absolutely right, i'm worried that the madness has just begun with all of our information on the Internet.

Amy- Sometimes it takes a few days for Google to remove sites from its index, check back in a few days to see if Google has removed your spokeo listing from its index.

Hope this helps!

I hate Spokeo. I removed my info about a year ago and just yesterday discovered I was on Spokeo again and multiple times ... with photos of previous addresses in different cities. So infuriating and against the law. I removed all of this before! Spokeo is ripe for a lawsuit.
