One of the greatest parts of the holiday season is the joyful music that plays starting around Thanksgiving all the way until Christmas Day. I think holiday tunes help create a hopeful soundtrack for the holiday season, as they bring people together singing in unison, the traditional lyrics to songs that remind us of our youth, happier times and the reason for the holiday.
All around the world people are celebrating, and thanks to the Internet and one church’s mission to unite the musically inclined (and even the not so musically inclined), the world can celebrate together through song.
Liquid Church is one of New Jersey’s fastest growing Christian churches with campuses in Northern New Jersey and online, reaching nations across the world. The church is very active online and offers the same values and beliefs shared in service on Sundays to the online world, available anytime, via the Web. This year, the church decided to create an online virtual choir; however, this is not the first time a virtual choir was created.
In 2010, Eric Whitacre, a well-known composer, created an online choir of hundreds of voices around the world. The online choir was another YouTube sensation, creating buzz all over the Web.
Following in Whitacre’s footsteps, Liquid Church has pulled all of the campuses together to create the same type of online choir. Members were given specific online instructions including tempo and dress attire for the online choir to sing “Silent Night.” The option to join is closed now, but the finished production will be revealed on Christmas Eve, when the masterpiece is revealed during service.
