I wrote a blog at the beginning of June about Pitbull
being exiled to Kodiak, Alaska to bring some Miami heat to his fans.
Pitbull met with fans, as promised, and surprisingly didn't get mauled by any Kodiak
bears. Walmart, via Facebook,
began a promotion to bring Pitbull to the most voted upon hometown store. Mr. Worldwide himself was chosen to go
to the little town of Kodiak, thanks to Facebook users. The Internet has been a
part of some pretty memorable moments this summer alone, including some that
are really out of this world.
Starting with the 2012
summer Olympics in London, the internet has
been giving us reasons to make even more viral GIFs and memes. Now, I know it's
not funny to laugh at other people, but if someone made a meme or GIF of me,
I'd be ecstatic. With being a great athlete in the eyes of the public, you're
subject to social parodies. These Olympic athletes (and the Queen) have to take
the comedic creations lightly; Keep Calm
and London On.

McKayla Maroney takes the Gold in Olympic memes and GIFs with her not
impressed picture. McKayla even has a Tumblr page dedicated to
her and her infamous picture. This GIF
was prior to the instantly famous "not impressed" face of McKayla Maroney.

This is McKayla before the not impressed picture.

This is McKayla not impressed by her dougie-ing.
Besides the amazing GIFs and memes the Olympics have brought
us, as a nation, we were also excited to have earned the most medals with 104 -
46 of those being Gold medals. Social media has helped followers of the games
feel closer to their favorite athletes across the pond. Athletes such as Michael Phelps, Missy Franklin, Natalie Coughlin, Lolo Jones, and many others have
constantly kept fans updated on their adventures at the games via Tweets and
photos...And we thank you!

Last week, the US Women's Soccer Team defeated Japan 2-1 for
the gold medal. It was a very emotional game, considering the fact that USA
lost to Japan in the World
Cup Final in 2011. A strong Japanese team deserved credit for being able to
fight through the hardships their home country was suffering from after a devastating
tsunami rocked the entire country.

At this point, I can't resist sharing with you a GIF of my
awesome co-workers who went to one of New York City's biggest football (soccer)
bars, Nevada Smith's, to cheer on the girls. They were interviewed by the
associated press (view video here) and then created into a GIF, thanks to our web designer Ross!

Lastly, thanks to the internet we have been able to watch Rover Curiosity's mission on Mars. Curiosity landed on Mars on Monday and is giving us some great
insight on the planet we've longed to meet. Not only has Curiosity given us a better
look into our galaxy, but we were also given more insight into the wonderful
missions of NASA.

"If my mohawk
gets a few more people excited about science & this mission, that's
awesome."
Oh! Hello, Bobak
Ferdowsi, a flight director for this mission who has become an internet sensation
via Twitter and memes. More than 45,000 tweeters followed this stud as he received
plenty of props for his Mohawk (as well as his handsomeness). This hottie has also received marriage proposals from men and women alike via Twitter.

Besides NASA's stud, we have to remember the important part
of this mission; Rover Curiosity. Curiosity has taken some spectacular pictures
for us to see from earth. Below is a picture of us (Earth), Jupiter, and Venus;
this picture is absolutely stunning. These pictures have gone viral on Tumblr,
Twitter, Facebook and we patiently await future pictures from Rover Curiosity.

My favorite find on the Internet in regards to the Mission
on Mars is a panoramic
view. It's breath-taking; Science has taken a pretty exciting step forward
and having someone like the NASA Mohawk Guy represent the mission makes science
look more attractive.
There have been plenty of viral worthy situations this year
in the US besides the aforementioned. Who can forget the wildfires in Colorado?
And the mass shooting by James
Holmes; killer of 12 innocent lives at the Dark Knight Rises premiere in Aurora, CO? We have to remember what
social media was invented for - to keep us united and informed of our society.
From across the pond in London to the lives lost in Aurora, we still get a glimpse of each other's lives through the internet.
