Many businesses are realizing the importance of utilizing social networking sites but what many don't grasp is that establishing a presence is simply the first step. Your accounts on social sites need to be maintained and managed in order to make any impact on the Internet.

You're not serious about your facebook fan page, unless:

1) You utilize facebook apps.
Whether its networked blogs, real estate, music or shopping tabs, utilizing fb applications to ensure your page is robust will give your fans a unique facebook experience that keeps them coming back to your fan page for more.

2) You set a custom URL for your fan page.
No fan page is complete unless you can link directly to it. Go to facebook.com/username to set your own custom URL- but be careful- these things are pretty much set in stone.

3) You create an attractive landing page.
Companies big and small are taking full advantage of facebook's open graph and the ability to create dynamic landing pages that encourage facebook users to like and interact with fan pages. Are you?

4) You upload pictures, videos AND fill out your bio section completely.
Uploading one picture that you use as your avatar is not enough. Upload photos AND videos and make sure that people see them by sharing on your wall. Additionally, filling out your bio section completely so people can easily understand what your company has to offer is always a good idea.

5) You encourage communication and interaction.
Allowing people to contact you is as simple as linking to your website, other social media accounts, providing a contact number and/or email address and such. Give facebook users the power to easily reach out when they're ready to and believe me, they will.

6) You let people know you're on facebook.
Incorporate social widgets on your website, business cards, newsletters, invoices and anywhere else you can think of! If people don't know you're on facebook, then how do you expect them to find you there?

7) You post daily status updates that either informs, educates, or just simply entertains facebook users.
After becoming a fan of your page, facebook users will need a reason to stay a fan. Make sure your page stays active by posting updates daily that will keep users interested in what you have to say.
